Raine and I had been friends for about two years now. I had met her when I was a freshman, and she was a sophomore. My personality had always been close to the goth crowd, and near the middle of my freshman year I still didn’t have many friends. I mean, I had friends, just not any close ones. It was sometime in March that I met Raine for the first time. At the time, my hair was pitch black, hung in my eyes, and I wore everything black, even black lipstick. I was skipping class that day when I saw a cinnamon colored girl, with dark brown hair tied in a messy bun, thick rimmed glasses, and what looked like a middle aged woman’s outfit. There were tears streaming down her face, and when she noticed me she panicked and ran away. Now that I think about it, I probably was pretty intimidating. I was bored, and had nothing else to do, so I followed her. Eventually I found her again. She was sitting on a bench outside the cafeteria, sobbing. it was pouring rain, so I didn’t understand why she couldn’t do her crying inside the building. I put the hood on my skeleton hoodie up, and walked slowly outside so as not to startle her. I didn’t really understand why I was taking so much interest in this girl, but now that I look back I’m really thankful that I did. I sat down quietly beside her on the bench. She looked slowly up at me, her eyes behind her glasses, puffy and red. “What do you want?” she said hoarsely. “Dunno. I’m not here to pick a fight or anything, you were just the only interesting thing I saw at the moment. So what you crying for?” I asked her. “Why should I tell you that? So you can spread it around the school?” she angrily replied. I put my hands up defensively, “Whoa, Whoa, I was just asking to pass the time, since I’m assuming you don’t want to go back to class, and I’m skipping.” I said. “Oh, and here’s a tissue,” I said pulling a small pack out of my jacket pocket. “Um, thank you,” she said. She then began to tell me how she’d had a project in one of her classes, and that she had to present today. All week she had been stressed about it, and when the time came to present, the anxiety was too much for her. She burst into tears in the middle of the presentation, and all the kids had made fun of her. When she finished her story, in the distance we heard the bell ring. “Well, I better go back to class,” she said. “But aren’t you still upset?” I asked concernedly. “No, now that you sat with me, and listened to my troubles, I feel a lot better. I think I can make it through the rest of the day, unscatched.” she said with a determined look. “Well, I’m glad I could help in any way,” I replied. She walked hurriedly back into the school building. I sat on the bench quietly, wondering what I wanted to do now. About thirty seconds after she left, I heard the door open, and close. I looked up, and saw that the girl was back. “Did you forget something?” I asked curiously. “Um yeah. I wanted to know your name. Mine’s Raine by the way,” she said with a hand extended. “Ava,” I replied, and shook her hand. That was the beginning of our friendship. From then we talked more and more, and saw each other almost everyday. We became the best of friends, and I don’t think I could imagine life without her.
